The gardens with their fishpond, the outer walls and its towers that can still be seen in rue Michel de l’Hospital and rue de la Tournelle, the barn, which still appears impressive in size in spite of the fact that half of its length was removed, and above all the Abbey Enclosure. Passing through the 14th century gatehouse porch, which now houses the collections of the Toy Museum, visitors leave behind the noisy world of the town and find themselves magically immersed in the atmosphere of another age. They can now walk along the footpath used by the nuns, their royal or more humble visitors, servants and all the Abbey staff. The royal priory was founded in 1297, along the town’s western outer wall, the year in which Saint Louis was canonised, and was built on the order of Philip the Fair in honour of his grandfather. It could house up to 200 young women from the nobility. The monastery was sold as national property at the Revolution and was divided up between the various buyers. The priory church was used as a stone quarry for over 20 years.
